What a load of bull.  this from a so called expert!!  i would love to see how it would be policed.  can u imagine someone asking for your rod licence in the middle of the night when its -4 and we are all codding?  This just would not work, and how would all this be paid for, i wonder?

Hopefully will never happen.

ermmmmmm right ok!! Undecided

it does seem a bit of a soft idea doesnt it.how the hell do you "re-stock" the sea??? fish in the sea are wild not kept in a pond
they go where the best spot is at the time

what would be the real benefits of this licencing happening?Huh

Love him or hate him, i fail to see how anybody can question Alan Yates ability as an angler. He is entiled to his view on the subject the same as you are entitled to yours Scott. Things would be so dull if everybody agreed!

I know what your saying rick, but this idea had been thrown around for years and the reason it has not been brought in is because it just cannot be policed etc and like spannerman says, the sea is not a pond to be stocked up when you feel like it.  The fact that Alan Yates after all his years fishing and being involved in the media side of things has decided to back the idea sounds completely daft.  my biggest problem with the licence is that it will be the normal law abiding anglers who, put under size fish back and respect the environment who will fork out for all this.  what about the anglers that don't do any of this do you think they are going to go down and buy a licence??  i think not, its just another way of taking from the people who will follow the law, the guys who don't get away Scott free!!! (Pardon the pun)

I'm afraid the ability to police it or not wouldn't come into it Scott. How many miles of rivers are there in this country? How many miles of banks on ponds lakes and reservoirs? Get the idea? Its one mans call on the subject, but its got people talking if nothing else! Seriously...do you ever think it will come in?

Dont freshwater anglers fish during the night? If you have ever freshwater fished now or in the past, i wonder how many times you have been asked to produce a licence, i know i never have been.

i used to carp fish years ago when i was at school, and have camped down at ponds for long weekends through the summer, never once have i seen a baliff!!!never asked to produce a licence!

if it was to come in majority of people that are seen on the bank, would pay for a licence.
but you can guarrentee if you forget to renew a licence suddenly the environment agency bloke turns up and sticks a fine at you or something!!!

"Quote from Alan Yates"

“The fishing off our shores is in total meltdown, and it won’t even exist in the future if the current trends continue. We all celebrate when we catch a few cod, but those who think that our shores offer great fishing want to try going to Norway. Once they’ve experienced the fishing over there they will realise what a truly awful state British sea angling is really in.”

So, I suppose when sea anglers pay for the licenses, the cod will miraculously multiply and we all bag up on 20lbers.

This is why there are no fish or very few.  Until this is addressed then no rod license is ever going to make any difference.  (IMHO)

Hi Rick, Im a freshwater angler and I have had my licence checked quite a few times at a private club pond at Holton le moor.
I guess it depends where you are fishing if you get your licence checked! Ive fished the Trent and Ancholme loadsa times and never seen a bailiff. Probably too long a walk for them.

'Alan, who this week turned down the opportunity to represent sea anglers on the Angling Trust Advisory Board, said: “Sea fishing is in a real state and the majority of anglers simply do not care. They want it all their own way, and it’s always down to a handful of committee members to do the important work for the sport while the rest do nothing.'

Hmmm!  What important work do this 'handful of committee members' do?

Personally, I think sea fishing is in a state because of pollution and overfishing with trawlers.

As for a sea fishing licence - probablly just another money spinner for the government.

Jim

Don't you think that the amount of people who signed the petition kind of suggests that Yates has a valid point in saying the majority of anglers aren't bothered?

I don't think myself that the full picture has been explained or even looked at properly about the subject. I'm sure a lot of people think I'm on favor of it coming in, but in truth I'm not. I did read an article the other week were they had a license, and they thought the fishing was as good as what it was because of it. Coincidence?....who can say for sure...

Committees...ahhhh...now theres a subject!! Ive been on fishing club committees.... Get it right, get no praise, get it wrong.....oooerrr....aren't there a lot of people they willing to add their penneth on the subject! Lots are anglers are world beaters at complaining, but given the chance to do something about it, they bury their heads in the sand. At least some are willing to stand up and be counted.
