Fresh Yellow Tails | How to Store Them, Bait Them Up & What Fish to Target
When it comes to quality sea fishing bait, few worms get anglers as excited as a good fresh Yellow Tail Lugworm!
Whether you’re chasing winter cod along the Humber, targeting sole on a summer evening or hoping for a decent bass from the beach, yellow tails have earned their place in the bait box.
But what makes them so special? How do you keep them in top condition, and what’s the best way to present them on the hook?
At Squids In! SEA BAITS, we know that good bait can make all the difference. So here’s our guide to getting the very best out of your fresh yellow tails.
What Are Yellow Tail Lugworms?
Yellow tails are a highly regarded type of lugworm used by UK sea anglers, particularly when targeting cod, sole and other bottom-feeding species.
They’re known for their distinctive yellowish tail section, which gives them their name.
Like other lugworms, yellow tails live in burrows beneath the sand and mud of our coastline, where they feed on organic material within the sediment.
Their natural scent, soft body and movement make them an attractive food source for fish searching along the seabed.
Why do anglers rate them so highly?
- Excellent natural scent released into the water.
- Soft, appealing bait that fish readily take.
- Suitable for both small and larger hook baits.
- Particularly popular for cod and sole fishing.
- Can be combined with squid and other baits to create bigger cocktail presentations.
For many experienced sea anglers, a fresh yellow tail is a bait worth getting excited about!
What Fish Can You Catch on Yellow Tail Lugworm?
Yellow tails are a versatile bait, but certain species are particularly worth targeting.
Cod & Codling
Yellow tails are a cracking choice when targeting cod and codling, especially during the colder months.
Their natural scent makes them a popular option for fishing estuaries, beaches and muddy coastal marks.
For bigger cod, try presenting two or three yellow tails together, or combine them with a strip of squid to create a substantial cocktail bait.
Top tip: When targeting winter cod in the Humber, a fresh yellow tail and squid cocktail is well worth trying.
Dover Sole
If you’re targeting Dover sole, yellow tails deserve a place in your bait box.
Sole feed along sandy and muddy seabeds, hunting for worms and other small creatures.
A fresh yellow tail presented neatly on a suitable small hook can be an excellent choice.
Keep the bait presentation relatively slim, with the hook point exposed, and fish close to the seabed.
Bass
Bass are opportunistic feeders and will readily take natural worm baits.
Yellow tails can be effective when fishing surf beaches, estuary channels and other areas where bass hunt for food.
Try a single large worm or a couple of smaller worms presented naturally.
Whiting
During autumn and winter, whiting can be keen feeders on lugworm.
A smaller section of yellow tail on a suitable hook can produce bites, particularly when fishing from beaches, piers and estuary marks.
Flounder & Other Flatfish
Yellow tails can also attract flounder, dabs and other flatfish.
Try a smaller bait presentation on a two-hook flapper rig, keeping your bait close to the bottom where these species feed.
How to Store Fresh Yellow Tail Lugworm
Fresh bait is only as good as the condition you keep it in.
Yellow tails need careful handling, especially if you’re planning to keep them for more than a day.
1. Keep Them Cool
Store your yellow tails in a suitable bait fridge or cool, temperature-controlled environment.
Aim for a consistently cool temperature, generally around 4–8°C, without allowing the worms to freeze.
Avoid direct sunlight, warm rooms and sudden temperature changes.
2. Use a Shallow Bait Tray
A shallow plastic tray is ideal for keeping your worms spread out rather than piled on top of one another.
Depending on how they’re supplied, they can be kept in a little clean, chilled seawater or suitable damp wrapping.
If using seawater, keep it shallow rather than submerging the worms in a deep, stagnant container.
Never use untreated freshwater.
3. Remove Damaged Worms
Check your bait regularly.
If any worms are badly damaged, leaking heavily or deteriorating, separate them from the healthy worms.
Damaged worms can quickly affect the condition of the rest of your bait.
4. Change the Seawater When Necessary
If you’re storing your worms in seawater, replace it regularly with clean seawater at a similar temperature.
Don’t let the water become dirty or stagnant.
5. Use Them as Fresh as Possible
For the best results, we recommend using fresh yellow tails as soon as practical after receiving them.
Their keeping time varies depending on their condition, storage method and temperature.
Squids In! Top Tip: Only take the worms you need out of the fridge when baiting up. Keep the rest cool until you’re ready for them.
How to Bait Up with Yellow Tail Lugworm
Good bait presentation can make a real difference to your fishing.
Yellow tails can be used individually, in bunches or as part of a cocktail bait.
Method 1 – Single Yellow Tail
Ideal for sole, flounder, bass and general shore fishing.
- Select a healthy yellow tail.
- Carefully thread the worm onto a suitable baiting needle or directly onto your hook.
- Work the worm gently up the hook shank.
- Position the bait so it sits naturally.
- Make sure the hook point remains clear.
This is a simple, effective presentation that works well when fish are feeding on smaller natural baits.
Method 2 – Multiple Yellow Tails for Cod
When you’re targeting larger fish, a bigger bait can be worth trying.
- Select two or three yellow tails.
- Thread the worms carefully onto your baiting needle.
- Transfer them onto the hook and, if needed, up the hook snood.
- Arrange them into a substantial bait.
- Use a little bait elastic if necessary to help hold everything together.
A Pennell-style rig can be useful when presenting larger baits for cod.
Method 3 – Yellow Tail & Squid Cocktail
Now we’re talking!
Combining fresh yellow tails with squid is a classic sea fishing approach, particularly when targeting cod.
How to prepare it:
- Thread one or two yellow tails onto your hook.
- Add a narrow strip of squid alongside the worms.
- Secure the squid with a few turns of bait elastic.
- Keep the hook point and gape clear.
- Cast out and let that natural scent do its work.
The squid helps add toughness to the bait presentation, while the lugworm provides additional natural scent.
It’s a combination well worth having ready for a winter session.
Best Rigs for Fishing Yellow Tails
The best rig depends on the species you’re targeting and the conditions you’re fishing in.
| Target Fish | Suggested Rig |
|---|---|
| Cod & codling | Pulley Pennell or up-and-over rig |
| Dover sole | Two-hook flapper or flowing trace |
| Bass | Running ledger or up-and-over rig |
| Whiting | Two or three-hook flapper |
| Flounder & dabs | Two-hook flapper |
Match your hook size and bait presentation to the fish you’re targeting, and always consider tide strength, casting distance and the type of seabed.
Are Yellow Tails Good for Fishing the River Humber?
Absolutely!
The Humber Estuary offers plenty of opportunities for anglers targeting cod, sole, whiting and flatfish.
With its muddy seabed, strong tidal flows and variety of fishing marks, natural worm baits are a popular choice.
Yellow tails are particularly worth trying when fishing for cod during autumn and winter or sole during the warmer months.
Whether you’re fishing from the banks of the Humber, around Grimsby and Cleethorpes or further along the East Coast, having quality fresh worm bait can give you confidence in your presentation.
And as every sea angler knows, sometimes the difference between a quiet session and a cracking one comes down to what’s on the hook!
